About the Book
From the banks of Calcutta’s seaport on the Hooghly River to the shores of Melbourne, Norfolk Island, then on to Sydney Harbour, the call of the sea echoed softly across the span of my grandfather’s 91 years of life.
It was said of The Baldwin family that “saltwater flowed in their veins”, with several generations of skilled mariners.
On his mother’s side, descended from Dr William Carey, there was also a strong call of a different kind.
Life at sea was not for Bernie however, despite his father’s wishes. And yet, the call
of the sea continued to influence and draw him, in unexpected ways.
This is my Grandpa’s story, compiled from his memoirs, handwritten letters, an oral history interview, notes From his own Bible, and the Baldwin family Bible.

About the Creator
Kaye Pearce lives with her husband on the beautiful South Coast of New South Wales in Australia. As a mother of two adult children and now a grandmother, family connections have always played an important role. Fond childhood memories of her grandfather Bernie Baldwin and the stories he'd told the family over the years of growing up in India, inspired her to one day put into print the memoirs that he had written in the 1970's. This was a bigger project than first imagined, as the story needed to be arranged into chronological order, and as some of Bernie's hand-written letters and notes were discovered, and an oral history recording, these were also woven into his story in the appropriate places, with the addition of many photographs. The original script was adhered to as much as possible, with editing only for the purposes mentioned.
