About the Book
The book is a collection of photographic essays, each focusing on a protagonist or a group of people who have chosen the Western Isles as their place to life. The selection of portraits is not mending to be all-encompassing, but to represent the diversity of island live.
A special appeal lies in the contrast between the pictures of the photographer, representing an outside perspective, and the personal statements of the protagonists, speaking about their motivations to do what they do. Framework for the essays are short associational passages written by the author and poems by Peter Kerr from North Uist, which serve as counterpoint in the composition, inviting the reader to pause and reflect in the process of viewing. In addition to this there will be a chapter from a guest authors, John Randall.
The overall issue is the examination of identity, change and continuance and the spirit behind a society in a geographically and economically demanding situation. The documentary photography transporting this message shows the protagonists in their daily life without being arranged.
