About the Book
This book mostly contains images taken around my neighbourhood, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, London, SE16. Many were taken at low tide along the northern edge of these districts, which borders the southern banks of the River Thames, where evidence of the once thriving maritime industry is still to be seen.
Rotherhithe was until recent modern times a busy docks district, 70% of which was made up of water in the form of several individual wet and dry docks. Containerised trade saw the beginning of the end of the industry in the early 1970's as ports closer to the mouth of the Thames were modernised to handle the large container vessels, which were unable to negotiate their way safely further up the river.
Rotherhithe has a rich maritime history reaching back many centuries. Naval and commercial shipping was built and broken up here, and numerous related trades had premises along the banks of the river. Still to be seen along the riverside are many old warehouses, most of which have been converted into luxury apartments for those able to afford them.
The best way to experience some of this history is to take a walk along the foreshore at low tide, from where many remnants of the last 150 years can still be seen. As well as the old warehouses there are many small reminders of the industry which once existed here.
Cover and back photos are views from my front window of Tower Bridge and the River Thames. On the right bank of the river is Wapping and on the left is Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.
