About the Book
Before beginning research, my ideas about communal living were based on others’ impressions of whom this style of life is aimed at. The vision that was created was one of a much more secluded and focused way of life. When the word commune is mentioned it is tended to believe that all those involved have the same ideologies; you imagine that everyone is in the pursuit of the same objective and that their lives are in some way compromised because of this. From working with many of the residents at Springhill it is obvious that every individual is as diverse as the next, living their own private lives whilst accompanied with the caring, supportive nature of a community around them. As an intentional community everyone shares the belief that they work better as a group. Each resident adds and takes something different away from the community and this allows them to add enrichment to others’ lives as well as their own. This way of living would not be for all, but for the residents of Springhill it is clear they have a sense of freedom that is both constructive and liberating.
