About the Book
‘Dear Tony Abbott....’ is the innovative brainchild of two elder (old men really) book readers with wide experience in providing political and organisational advice to a number of Australian Federal politicians and senior leaders of successful Australian enterprises. The authors set out the history of their letters of advice to Tony Abbott following his election to Parliament in 1994 through to 2016, using ‘lessons of literature’ as the keystone of their advice.
Each author offers a judicial blend of subtle and cutting wit and uniquely perceptive humour, to get their story across. They offer readers a fresh and challenging approach in how they might better view politicians and highlight the general idiocy and brittleness and friability of Federal politics since the mid 1990s. The book is both a whimsical political fantasy and a slightly black comedy of despair over squandered political opportunities and human talent.
With its sardonic insightfulness, it is a must read for all new Federal politicians and students of political history and science. Its unique blend and insight into the ridiculous and humorous sides of Australian political life provides a welcome relief to the endless turgid biographies and autobiographies ‘the Australian people’ have been subjected to over the Keating, Howard, Rudd, Gillard, Abbott and
Turnbull years.
In an attempt to counter the mindlessness of ‘adult’ colouring-in books it also challenges readers to personalise their book by pasting in their own favourite political cartoons, photographs and snippets of wry political commentary. As such, ‘Dear Tony Abbott...’ will make a great Xmas present.
In all, an impressive debut book and an original approach to Australian political history.
