About the Book
A photographic record of the 2016 Shepherds Meet and Show at Wasdale Head. For anyone who does not know the beginnings of these Fell Meets they have their roots in the age old practice of returning stray sheep after a gather. Shepherds would walk the strays over the fells to an agreed Fell Head where the sheep would be returned to the rightful owners. There might just have been a drink or two taken in the evening before they walked their prodigal sheep back to their farms the following morning. Of course, one day, someone said “my Herdwicks are better than yours,” and shows grew up around the meets. And what shows! Proper shows where the animals take centre stage, not the glorified boot fairs with a few animals that are all too common across the country.
