About the Book
Horden is a small village located on the North East coast line. It is known for its coalmines that used to produce over 1.5 million tons of coal each year.
The 1980’s were a turning point for the future of the North Eastern region. In particular, the 1984 miners’ strike had the majority of miners ‘picketing’ on the streets. The reason for this public outcry was the Conservative Party’s decision to shut down around 60 mines deeming them unprofitable. The decision was made under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher.
Born in 1985 in Horden meant I was part of the new generation. The one that was unavoidably affected by the political events throughout the 1980s, which led to poor housing, neglected infrastructure and funding deficit. Despite the government’s promise to regenerate the region, the pit was left desolate and the buildings around it derelict, which an entire generation used as a playground. I left the village in 2006. I have recently been back to document the village in its current state and ask the people what effect the closure of the pit has had 30 years on.
