About the Book
On a hot, clear, summer's day in early May 2007, we followed the Thames pathway from Greenwich, around the Peninsular, and, after sightings of the Thames Barrier, ending up at The Pilot Pub.
The day we walked the trail was extraordinary. A discovery of strange contrasts ... juxtapositions ... odd occurrences ... We found unexpected beauty in the 'sweet decay' of the unkempt, the out of use, the undervalued. A secret, silent, solitude, so strange at the hub of a city, on the south side of the Thames. We passed remnants of once thriving industries ... wharves, quays, barges, gasworks ... Here exuberant natural growth was forcing through. Across the river the manicured Canary Wharf gleamed coldly.
In May 2007, nervous forecasts of the toxic credit bubble about to burst were in the air. Looking at my photos almost six years later, I realise this must have been on my mind as I meandered haltingly, taking time to look, to frame, to capture ...
