About the Book
Churches of Europe offer astounding opportunities for those of us who love photography. From the 11th C Romanesque churches in France and the soaring Gothic structures that followed in the 12th and 13th C to the elaborate decoration of 15th C Flamboyant Gothic and Baroque styles, there is a variety that reflects both the age and country in which these buildings were constructed. Our travels have focused on France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and the images of vaults in this book are drawn from our explorations there.
Making kaleidoscopic images from photographs of vaults allows me to look at them in a new way. Colors and forms are preserved as new arrangement and patterns appear. From one photograph of a vault, the multiple views that emerge, often with surprising results, expand the imagination beyond what the original builders or artists intended. Paired with each kaleidoscope is the original image from which it was constructed as well as information about where the vault is located and brief comments on the significance and style of the architecture and historical information about the building.
The vaults pictured in this book have been observed by tourists and visitors for centuries. Here they are looked at once again but now as unique images that allow us to imagine endless new patterns that add to the beauty of their form and function.
