About the Book
Birds&Bananas are a series of photographs that marinate on the concept of food and society. They comment on how nature is impacted by the way in which we deal with our trash. As the photography progressed, a connection developed between the shapes of the freezer composted bananas and the bird. They began to mimicked each other. This is credited to the fact that both items shared space in the artist's freezer for an extended period of time. The bird and the bananas, not only began to emulate each other physically but also symbolically. Joy Elisabeth Waldinger is a community artist and educator from Philadelphia who has worked for the Mural Arts Program, Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Wagner Free Institute of Science. Her work explores humans and their connection to nature and responsibility to the planet to ensure generations to come.
